COURSE DESCRIPTION
Course Description
This 2-day practical course was created for small animal practitioners with knowledge and practical experience with small animal ultrasound of the large abdominal organs (liver, spleen, GI & urogenital tracts) who want to take their skills to the next level. Vets will learn how to examine the adrenal glands, pancreas, accessible lymph nodes, vascular system and reproductive tract, enabling them to perform a complete and comprehensive abdominal ultrasound exam.
The 7 hours of interactive lectures and case-discussions will focus on how to perform a systematic and complete ultrasonographic exam of the entire abdomen and how to identify the following structures and differentiate between normal and abnormal ultrasonographic appearances:
- Adrenal Glands & Pancreas
- Commonly Identifiable Lymph Nodes – Jejunal & Medial Iliac
- Commonly Identifiable Vessels – Aorta, Caudal Vena Cava & Portal Vein
- Male & Female Reproductive Tracts
- Fine Needle Aspirates, Ultrasound-Guided Biopsies & Cystocentesis Techniques
- Common Artefacts
- Advanced Abdominal Ultrasound Case-Discussion
There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions throughout the lectures and practical sessions, making this course highly interactive.
The 6-7 hours of practical sessions in small groups (max. 3-4 attendees per machine and live dog) will allow the attendee to train the different aspect of the abdominal ultrasound exam beyond the large abdominal organs on live dogs under the close supervision of the highly experienced instructors:
- Adrenal Glands
- Pancreas
- Commonly Identifiable Lymph Nodes
- Vascular Ultrasound
- Reproductive Tract
- Fine Needle Aspirates, Ultrasound-Guided Biopsies & Cystocentesis Techniques
By the end of this course, the participants will be comfortable and confident in identifying and examining the adrenal glands, pancreas, accessible lymph nodes, vascular system and reproductive tract and in differentiating normal from abnormal abdominal appearances.
The course fee includes lunches at a restaurant, coffee/tea breaks, a wine & cheese reception, extensive electronic course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions). Early course registration is recommended as there are only limited number of places available due to the highly practical nature of this course.
Alison graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2007 and initially completed a 12 month equine internship in the South of England. She then worked for almost 9 years in a referral practice in Devon where she carried out first opinion equine work as well as leading the anaesthesia and medicine caseloads. She holds the RCVS Advanced Practitioner certificate in Equine Medicine. Alison was appointed as a lecturer in Equine Anaesthesia in 2017 and is currently studying towards the European Diploma in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia.
More InfoSubsequent to graduating from Cambridge University in 2006, Dr Underwood undertook a large animal surgery and critical care internship at The University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center. She then ‘converted to the dark side’ and spent two years in Dr Virginia Reef’s ultrasound and cardiology fellowship. In 2010 she joined the University of Queensland, Australia, where she completed a PhD and set up the equine ultrasound and cardiology service on the Gatton Campus. She returned to work in The University of Pennsylvania’s large animal and cardiology service in 2017 as a Clinical Assistant Professor in Large Animal Diagnostic Imaging with a focus in ultrasound and cardiology. Her interests include advanced musculoskeletal imaging techniques, 4D echocardiography and novel ECG analysis techniques.
More InfoApryle received her Bachelor of Arts cum laude in Biological Basis of Behavior in 2007 from the University of Pennsylvania, USA. She then qualified with her Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD), also from the University of Pennsylvania, in 2011 and went on to perform an internship in large animal medicine, surgery, and ambulatory practice at Texas A&M University’s Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, USA. Apryle has been a resident and post-graduate research assistant in equine dentistry at the University of Edinburgh since 2013. She is currently researching the development and clinical significance of cemental defects in equine maxillary cheek teeth infundibulae in pursuit of an MPhil. She also plans to achieve EVDC-Equine diplomate status in several years following completion of her residency in order to pursue specialty practice in advanced equine dentistry and to continue training veterinary students in a university setting. Additionally, Apryle has an interest in the training of veterinary practitioners in developing countries, particularly to improve dental care and nutrition for working equids.
More InfoAfter graduating from the University of Melbourne in 1997, Allison spent 2 years in mixed practice in Gawler, SA, before traveling to the USA to undertake a residency in Large Animal Internal Medicine at the Ohio State University. She completed her Masters of Science and was awarded Diplomate status of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) in 2002. She then became a faculty member at Auburn University in Alabama and competed a fellowship in Emergency and Critical Care and obtained Diplomate status in 2007. Allison worked as a specialist and taught veterinary students at Auburn University for 12 years, and has over 300 publications/book chapters/scientific presentations/conference lectures. She was awarded 30 research grants and has presented research throughout the world in the areas of equine endocrinology, fungal disease, neurology, infectious disease and pharmacology.
Allison resigned her position as a Professor of Equine Internal Medicine and Emergency and Critical Care at Auburn University in 2014 to return to family and friends in Australia, importing her two cats. Whilst working on her PhD based at the Swedish Agricultural University, she also worked at Gisborne veterinary clinic and was appointed as a board member on the Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board of Victoria. Allison was a keynote speaker at the PanPac conference in Brisbane and continues to mentor graduate students; provide advice to drug companies and write lay equine educational articles.
Allison joined the faculty at the University of Queensland in 2017. She has a clinical interest in large animal emergency and critical care, neurology, endocrinology, cardiology, ophthalmology, infectious disease (especially fungal), ultrasonography and endoscopy.
